Straight Guy Seeks Women’s Clothes?

man wearing a skirtHow does a 40 something corporate manager go from crew cut and loafers to skirts, boots, and long hair? With the help and blessing of his wife of course.

My wife kept complaining about how clothes never fit right…and I kept complaining about how women have nothing to complain about – Men have zero choices when it comes to comfort OR style. Somewhere in the conversation I mentioned about how women not only had their own style of clothes but could pull off wearing anything of a guys and be called “cute”. I brought up skirts and she questioned, “why can’t guys wear skirts?”

After a bit of searching I discovered guys always have and still do in other parts of the world…but lets leave that for another post. Long and short, The journey began of trying on various styles, learning what works and what definitely doesn’t, and having a lot of fun as a couple in the process. Somewhere in the middle, I started growing my hair longer than my collar for the first time ever in my life, and my wife began dreads and adopted Boho for a style. We’ve both been on a journey of self discovery and we love it.

I’ll admit, the first year was tough in public. If you don’t feel confident in yourself and what you are wearing, the poll of public opinion will eat you alive. Through it, I discovered who I am and what I like and why I like it. I am a man of faith, I challenge the status quo, I am a loving dad to two awesome boys, and I am deeply in love with a beautiful woman (who is also discovering who she is through the clothes she wears).

There are a lot of reasons why I wear skirts, but at the end of the day, I love the fact that I now have other options. Clothing isn’t gender based and it would have to take a pretty small minded person to stay at that level. It’s about feeling good about who you are and what makes you tick.

So here is my take – Skirt or no skirt – wear whatever you want – but do it well, be you, and own it!
